Employment Law Update
01/10/2009
1. Minimum Wage
The National Minimum Wage rises today to the following hourly rates for qualifying workers:
22 and over: £5.89
18-21: £4.83
16-17: £3.57
2. Tips and service charges
New laws come into force today which mean that hotels, restaurants and bars are no longer allowed to use tips or service charges to make up payment of minimum wages to their workers.
The British Hospitality Association is concerned that this could lead to up to 5000 job cuts, as there could be an estimated £130 million in extra costs as a result.
